Mu'awiyah Bin Abi Sufyaan (Radhwiya Allaahu 'Anhu)

Collected By: Muhammad Faraj Salim As-Sa'iy (may Allaah have mercy on him)

His dynasty

His name is Mu'awiyah bin Abu Sufyaan 'Sakhar' bin Harb bin Umayyah bin Abdi Shams bin Abdi Manaaf bin Qusay bin Kilaab. And his mother is Hind bint 'Utbah bin Rabiy'ah bin Abdi Shams bin Abdi Manaaf bin Qusay.

Mu'awiyah's sister is the wife of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu '' alayhi wa sallam), and her name is the Mother of Muslims Umm Habibah Ramlah bint Abi Sufyaan (Radhiya Allaahu '' anha).

It is reported that one day Abu Sufyaan (Mu'awiyah's father) went to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to ask him three things. Abu Sufyaan said to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him):

"I beg you three things".

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked him:

"What's that?"

He said:

"Command me to fight against the infidels as I was fighting against the Muslims".

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"I have agreed".

"Secondly let Mu'awiyah be your writer."

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"I have agreed".

The third time he asked the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to marry his daughter 'Azza bint Abi Sufyaan, but the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) refused because at that time he had already married his other daughter' Umm Habibah 'Ramlah daughter of Abi Sufyaan (Radhiya Allaahu '' anha).

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him:

"Or that's not lawful for me."

Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) was the author of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and there is a discrepancy between the ulema as to whether he was the author of the Revelation or he was writing a letter to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). its just normal.

He has created her

Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) was tall, white, with a lovely face, and had black hair and a beard as shiny as gold due to the yellow color he used to paint his beard with, which at that time was common.

His conversion

Many narrations have been received that Mu'awiyah converted to Islam before his father - Abu Sufyaan, but did not identify himself out of fear of his father who was the chief of the Quraysh

And in another narration he is said to have converted to Islam on the day of 'Fat-hu Makkah', the day the Muslims captured the city of Makkah.

In the book Siyar a'alaam an-Nubalaa, a weak hadith is quoted from Mas'ab az-Zubairiy that Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) said:

"My heart has been fascinated by Islam since the day of the Treaty of Hudaybiyay (before 'Fat-hu Makkah'), and when I narrated it to my mother she said to me:

"Don't go against your father."

"I decided not to tell anyone that I had  converted to Islam , but my father knew, and one day he said to me:" Your brother is better than you, because he follows my religion. I demonstrated my Islam the day the Muslims captured the city of Makkah . "

Some of its features

It is reported that one day the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was traveling with a group of people, and in conversation they referred to the land of Shaam 'Syria'. One said  "How can we defeat Shaam when the Romans are there?"

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) who was holding a stick and struck it on the shoulder of Mu'awiyah who was with them in the caravan, then said: "Allaah will suffice you with this one."

After the death of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). His companions (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhum) continued to spread the word of Allaah in the East of the Earth and in the West, while conquering country after country for spreading the call of' Laa ilaaha Illah Llah '.

Syria under Byzantine rule at the time was captured by Muslim forces, and the Muslim caliphah appointed two governors; Abu 'Ubaydah and Yaziyd bin Abi Sufyaan (Radhiya Allaahu' anhuma) to judge that great country. And when Yaziyd died, '' Umar bin Al-Khatw-twaab (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) appointed Mu'awiyah as his governor, then placed the whole Shaam under the leadership of only one governor, Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu). And when he ruled '' Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) let Mu'awiyah continue to judge all Shaam.

Says Imam Adh dhahabiy in Siyar aalam an Nubalaa:

"Do your calculations well to the one chosen by '' Umar, then '' Uthmaan let him go on. to him, but this is what kings are.

There were Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) who were better than him, but this man was able to rule the world by conquering many unbelieving lands, and opening many hearts due to excess in his gentleness, his prowess and his his intellect with the ability to weigh things and make the right decisions and opinions at the right time. "

It is also reported that one day someone said to Ibn 'Abbaas (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu):

"Mu'awiyah prays for only one rak'ah."

Ibn 'Abbaas (Radhiya Allaahu' anhuma) who was on the side of Ali (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) in the war against Mu'awiyah said:

"Leave him alone, because he is a companion of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)." Al-Bukhaari 3765

Ibn Hajar says in celebrating this hadith:

"He is a companion, which means that he would not have done so unless he saw his companion who is the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)."  Fat-hul Baariy / Kitab al-Manaaqib

And in another narration, when asked Ibn 'Abbaas:

"What is your opinion on the Commander of the Muslims (Mu'awiyah), he has only prayed one witr rak'ah ."

He said:

"He is aalim." Al-Bukhaari 3765 entrance to the Bounty of the Companions

One day Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) was told harsh words again by one of his subjects, and when asked:

"Why don't you give orders and he will be beaten?"

He replied:

"I beg Allaah not to see me as incapable of tolerating my citizens".  Minhaaj As-Sunnah - Ibn Taymiyah - Volume 4 page 384

Says Ibn Kathiyr:

"And this is the reason why the people of Shaam loved him so much and clung to him with great enthusiasm and devotion to the state and property without retreating when he asked them to rise up and demand revenge for the killing of '' Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu)."

Al-Bidaayah wan- Nihaayah 131

His Jihad

It has been narrated that Mu'awiyah was the one who assassinated Musaylimah al-Kadhaab, (the false Prophet), and gained great fame in the battle of Yarmuwk due to his bravery, and he was the commander-in-chief of the Islamic forces that conquered Qisariya when of the Caliphate of '' Umar bin Al-Khatw-twaab (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu). And during the Caliphate of '' Uthmaan bin 'Affaan (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu), Mu'awiyah led the Muslim navy that conquered Cyprus, and also took part in the conquest of many lands of Nazareth.

It is narrated in the authentic hadith that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"The first to seize the country by sea has been  responsible for ' forced  '. Al-Bukhaari 122/6 The Gate of Jihad and Siyar

Says Ibn Hajar:  "It is their responsibility , it means that they have committed an act that obligated them to enter Paradise."

Says Yaziyd bin 'Ubaydah:  "Mu'awiyah conquered Cyprus in the twenty-fifth year after a brutal defeat of the Byzantine navy."

And this was the first Islamic naval force formed during the Caliphate of '' Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu).

Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) also took part in the battle of Hunayn on the side of the Muslims. This war followed the capture of Makkah, and in the spoils of war the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) distributed one hundred camels to Mu'awiyah. And as a result of his participation in the battle of Hunayn Mu'awiyah he falls into the category of those who have been sent down by Allaah on that day.

Allaah says:

"Then Allaah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers. And He sent down His (angelic) hosts which you did not see." At-Tawbah - 9

Mu'awiyah also took part in the war against the nobles during the Caliphate of Abubakar (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) which occurred immediately after the death of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and also took part in the war to conquer the lands of Swayda, Arqah, Jubayl, Beirut and many others.

In the year 60 AH, the Roman emperor became disillusioned when he saw 'Ali and Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu' anhum) engaged in civil war, and tried to capture some of the cities under Islamic rule. History will never forget Mu'awiyah's letter to the Roman emperor saying:

" By God, if you do not pack your bags and return to where you came from, you are cursed ', I will agree with you and my uncle's son against you, then we will come to take you out of all your lands,

Fear crept into the heart of the Roman emperor who decided to withdraw his troops from all the cities he had captured and return to them begging for a solution. Al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah 119/8

His governorship

When he was governor of Shaam, Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) loved his citizens and they loved him. He ruled the land of Shaam as governor for twenty years, and for another twenty years he ruled as Caliph of the Muslims, and during his reign there was no opposition. But all the people were one thing behind him.

'' Umar bin Al-Khatw-twaab (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) when he visited Syria, was received by Governor Mu'awiyah who came with a large army of well-dressed horsemen.

'' Umar (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) said to him:

"Is this how you are? You are making such a big reception for me when it has come to me that people are not allowed to enter your house to convey their grievances. Why are you doing this?

Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) said to him:

"O Commander of the Muslims, we are in a country full of spies of our enemies, so we must show them our power for intimidation. What you command me I will obey and whatever you forbid I will leave."

It has been narrated from Abu Dawud that;

One day Abu Maryam Al-Azdiy entered Mu'awiyah and said to him:

"I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:

"If a person hides he should not see his people and refrain from helping them in their troubles, and Allaah will also avoid that person and will not help him in his troubles".

He says: "This hadith caused Mu'awiyah to change and become the one who followed the people and helped them". At-Tirmidhy

It is also reported that one day when Mu'awiyah went out to meet his people, the people attacked him. Mu'awiyah said to them:

"I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:

"Whoever wants to be raised up, let him prepare for his abode in the Fire." Ahmad - Abu Dawud - At-Tirmidhy and others.

War between two groups

After the third caliph of the Muslims '' Uthmaan bin 'Affaan (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) was assassinated, the Islamic state remained without a leader for five days, and the one who danced while ordering and forbidding all that time in Medina was Al-Ghafiqiy bin Harb the man who killed the Caliph '' Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu).

The people went to 'Ali bin Abi Taalib (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) twice to ask him to be their Caliph, and he always refused. But when they went to him a third time he had to agree to save the Ummah due to the great turmoil facing them at that time.

The Ahlus-Sunnah believe that 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) is the best Companion of all after Abubakar and '' Umar and '' Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhum), over the fact that there are differences between' Ali and '' Uthmaan. who surpassed his companion.

The difference between 'Ali and Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu' anhum) is that Mu'awiyah refused to ally himself with the new Caliph 'Ali until he first arrested the killers of' Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu), while' Ali wanted Mu'awiyah to unite and first so that the Ummah can reunite and listen to one another, and avoid civil war, and prevent the Islamic state from being turned into a lump that can easily be broken and swallowed up by the enemy, after which they will be able to talk about assassins.

'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) sent a letter through a messenger named Jariyr bin 'Abdullah to Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu), who was the governor of Shaam, and in the letter he wrote:

"Bisimillahi Rahmaani Rahiym,

But after all, since all the people are attached to me in Medina, then you too who are in Shaam must be bound to me. And this is because the people who were attached to me are the same ones who were connected with Abubakar and 'Umar and' Uthmaan. So the one who attends has no right to reject it and the one who does not have the right to oppose it. Certainly the  advice  is for the Muhajireen and the Answaar (People of Makkah and Medina). When they all agree on a person and choose him as their Imam, and Allaah is satisfied with their choice

I have sent him to you Jariyr, and he is one of the people of the Faith and a people who have migrated, so cling to me - Walaa quwwata illa billaah !! "  Nahjul-Balaaghah- p. 427 chapter 6

After reading the letter, Mu'awiyah asked all the people to gather in the mosque for advice. He ascended the pulpit to address them, and the following is among the things he said:

"This is a letter from 'Ali asking me to join him, and I as you know I have inherited the land of Shaam and' 'Umar, then inherited from' 'Uthmaan, and' Uthmaan as you know he has been killed by injustice.

And Allaah Says:

"And whoever is killed unjustly, then We have empowered his heir, if he wishes he will ask the Magistrate to kill him as he killed his man and if he wants he will forgive him". Bani Israaiyl - 33

So I want you to tell me your decision in this matter ".

Together they said:

"But we want his blood not to be wasted !!".

Mu'awiyah wrote to 'Amru bin Al-'Aas (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) who was retired at the time, and was living in Palestine seeking his advice and help.

Many stories have been received in various ways that one day Abu Muslim Al-Khulani went to Mu'awiyah with a group of people and asked him:

"O Mu'awiyah, are you competing with 'Ali because you think you are equal to him?"

Mu'awiyah replied:

"By God I know that he is better than I am and more righteous than I am. But you yourselves do not understand that 'Uthmaan has been brutally murdered and that I am the son of his uncle, and I have the right to avenge his blood? I will give him everything ".

They narrated to 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu), who did not answer anything, which made the people of Shaam more prepared for war.

'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) left Al-Kuufa for Shaam with a large army of about one hundred thousand people, and fierce fighting broke out between the two groups at a place called Swiffiyn, and thousands of Muslims lost their souls, causing great division. within the Ummah and finally emerged another group known as Khawaarij, and within that group appeared the killer of 'Ali bin Abi Taalib (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu).

This son of mine is a master

After the battle of Swiffiyn was stopped, and an agreement was reached between the two groups, and before the settlement was completed, 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) was killed while awakening the dawn prayer, and the one who killed him was a man from the Khawaarij group called 'Abdur- Rahmaan bin Muljim al Muradiy.

'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) used to go out alone unprotected to awaken the people at dawn prayer, and for this reason it was easy for the killer to attack him with a sword which he lay in a poison for a whole month.

The Muslims elected his son Al-Hasan bin 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) as their Caliph, and after ruling for six months, Al-Hasan decided to resign voluntarily and release the Caliphate Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyaan in order to reconcile the Ummah .

And in the year 41 AH, Al-Hasan and Mu'awiyah (Radhiyya Allaahu 'anhum) after the reunion entered the city of Al-Kuufah on horseback, and for this they were able to bring back the Ummah once again under one banner, and to avoid further civil war, and above all Al-Hasan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) succeeded in convincing the statement of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when he said about him:

"This son of mine is a master, and may Allaah have appointed him to be the mediator of the two noble groups of Muslims". Al-Bukhaari and others

Al-Hasan son of 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhuma) whom the Shias consider to be the second protected Imam (Al-Ma'aswuum) reconciled with Mu'awiyah and left him the leadership to guide the Muslims in their rule, their laws, their rituals. and in their Jihad against the disbelievers, and this is a clear indication that Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) was a good man and that the second Imam of the Muslims in Shia ideology was satisfied with him by entrusting him to the leadership of the Ummah.

Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) used to say whenever he saw Al-Hasan bin' Ali (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) saying to him:

"Marhaban the son of the Messenger of  Allaah."

And when he saw the son of Az-Zubayr (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) he used to say to him:

"Marhaban, O son of his uncle, the Messenger of Allaah and his disciple." Al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah - Volume Eight - Pg. 137

In a book revered by the Shi'ites by Sharif Ridha called 'Nahjul-Balaaghah', a letter is quoted in which he wrote 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) saying:

We fought with our fellow people of Shaam (Mu'awiyah's army), and it has become clear to me that our Righteous Worshiper is one and our Prophet is one and our call in Islam is one and we do  not deny  that they are believers in Allaah and His Messenger and we do  not deny.  that we also believe in Allaah and His Messenger. Unless we disagree on the blood of 'Uthmaan only, with which I am sanctified (I am far from it). " Nahj Al Balaghah p. 525 door (58) 'Letters sent to various cities concerning the Swiffiyn war.' Qum-2005 edition

Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) went to war against' Ali's (Radhiyya Allaahu 'anhu) forces for his effort relying on the various hadiths of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

It is reported that one day the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to 'Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu):

"O 'Uthmaan! On the day when Allaah gives you guidance in these matters, then the hypocrites demanded that you take off the clothes he was wearing, so that you will not agree to take them off."

Says' 'Aaishah (Radhiya Allaahu' anha):

"The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said 'Uthmaan these words three times." At-Tirmidhy and Ibn Majah at the door of the Bounty of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) number 112

It is also reported that when he stood in the front row in Mu'awiyah's army, Ka'ab bin Murrah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhum) said:

"If it were not for the words I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, I would not have fought on Mu'awiyah's side in retaliation for 'Uthmaan bin' Affaan. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on that day he spoke of 'fitan' - (trials and civil wars), and while he was talking about these things he passed by a man with his face covered. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"This man on that day will be in conversion." I followed the man to find out who he was. He was 'Uthmaan bin' Affaan. I confronted the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and asked him: "This one?"

He told me:

"Then."

At-Tirmidhi from Abi al Ash'ath as-Swana'aniy - door of Al Fadhaail story number 3704

From these hadiths, it became clear to Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) and his companions, that they were in justice, especially since the killers of' Uthmaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) were in the army of' Ali (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) ).

And for these reasons Mu'awiyah wrote to 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) saying to him:

"'Uthmaan is the son of my uncle, and he was killed unjustly and I am his successor, and Allaah says:

"And whoever is killed unjustly, then We have empowered his heir, if he wishes he will ask the Judge to kill him as he killed his man and if he wants he will forgive him." Bani Israaiyl - 33

'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) also for his part saw that since he was the newly elected Caliph of the Muslims, all the governors had to recognize him first, and that only he as the Imam of the Ummah had the right to retaliate, and he also saw that the time has not yet come.

So both have exerted themselves in rendering their judgments, and the  Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

"When he judges a judge he strives and punishes, he is paid twice as much, and when he judges wrongly, he is paid once." Al-Bukhaari

His rule

Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) was the Caliph of the Muslims for twenty years, during which time the Islamic state was strong, stable, peaceful, and united.

The superpowers surrendered orders in front of his troops. His rule included Makkah and Medina, Egypt, Shaam 'Syria' (formerly under Byzantine rule), Iraq, Khurasaan, Persia and the Arabian Peninsula all including Yemen and Morocco and many other countries

Imam Ahmad says that he was narrated by Ruuh that he heard Abu Umayyah 'Amru bin Yahya say:

"I heard my grandfather say that one day Mu'awiyah filled his vessel with water and followed the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to anoint him. And while he was anointing him, the  Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) raised his face immediately or twice looked at Mu'awiyah, then said to him:

"O Mu'awiyah, when you are given guidance, fear Allaah and be just."

Says Mu'awiyah:

"I realized that I would face the test as the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told me until I met them." This hadith has also been received from Ibn Abid-Duniya and Abu Ya'ala.  Al Fat-h 121/6

It is also reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed a good prayer for Mu'awiyah when he said:

"May Allaah make him the guiding guide". At-Tirmidhy door of Manaaqib, Imaam Ahmad door of Musnad Ash-Shamiyn, At-Twabaraaniy and many others.

When 'Umar bin Al-Khatw-twaab (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) appointed Mu'awiyah as governor of Syria, some people asked him:

"Why are you giving him governorship when this is a young man yet?"

'Umar said to them:

"What should I do if the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) himself prayed for him and said:

"May Allaah make him a leading guide?"

Ibn Kathiyr says in Al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah:

"During his reign, Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) attacked sixteen times in the Roman world and conquered many lands. and draw to Constantinople (Straits) - The sea gateway of the country now known as Turkey. "

This is Mu'awiyah who was one of the great ulema of his time who was the author of 'Umar bin' Abdul-Aziyz called Sulaymaan bin Mahran Al-A'amash, and this is due to his fact he was called 'Msahaf', he was favoring Mu'awiyah than 'Umar bin' Abdul-Aziyz (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhum).

It is known that many ulema have given 'Umar bin' Abdul-Aziyz the honor of being the fifth converted Caliph of Muslims due to his integrity.

His death

It is reported that in his last illness Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) addressed the people and said:

"Surely I am a reaped harvest. And my reign is very long till I have wearied thee, and I have wearied thee. And he that cometh not after me is better than I; and I beseech thee, be with me.

As he was dying, Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) said:

"I was with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on the rock of Safa'a, and I saw him cutting his hair. I collected some of his hair, so when I die take this hair and put it in my mouth and nose." Al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah and Siyar a'alaam an-Nubalaa

He died in Damascus at the age of seventy-eight, in the month of Rajab in the sixty year after the Hijra, and he enjoined him to be clothed in a garment given to him by the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Conclusion

When Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta'ala) brings the Prophets, He prepares in their crowd the people who will stand with them and help them, and these are their Companions, or their Companions. And Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala has honored our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) by preparing his Companions, and then praised them in his holy book as the best Ummah of all Ummah.

Allaah says:

"Ye are the best Ummah of all the Ummah revealed to the people (in the world) - enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil."

Aali 'Imraan - 110

Then He praised them again and again in various verses in the Holy Qur'an when He said:

"They are not equal among you who give before the victory and fight. Al-Hadiyd -10

The good he promised them was Paradise. And Allaah has given the Companions good news that He will also save them from the Fire when He said:

"As for those whose good deeds have preceded them, they will be separated from it. They will not hear its sound, and they will abide in what their souls desire.

That Great Threat will not grieve you. And the angels will receive you (by saying): This is your Day which you were promised! "  Al-Anbiyaa 101-103

And this does not mean that the Companions (Radhiyya Allaahu 'anhum) have been protected from committing wrongdoing' Maasuwmiyn 'or' infallible '. But they are as sinful creatures as any other creature. What we are forbidden is to accuse these Companions who have been glorified by Allaah or to humiliate them only with hatred. Because these are the ones who carried this glorious Qur'aan and delivered it to us, and spread it to all parts of the world. Without their efforts and sacrifices to the state and property for the spread of the word of Allaah, religion would not have reached us, and we would have remained to this day prostrating ourselves to fire and idols.

Among these noble Companions is Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyaan (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhuma). Even if we disagree and say that he converted to Islam after the opening of Makkah, Allaah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) has already revealed this Paradise to this Companion (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) when he said:

"And for all that Allaah has promised them  goodness ."

And  goodness  as we previously said that means Paradise.

It is stated by Ibnul 'Arabiy Al-Maalikiy in the book' Al-'Awaasim 'that:

When Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) entered Baghdad he found on the doors of the mosques it was written:

"The best of the people after the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is Abubakar then 'Umar then' Uthmaan then 'Ali then Mu'awiyah the uncle of all Muslims."

Mu'awiyah did not act in a hatred or take any action to erase the name of 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) who was preceded by him in excellence.

And when asked 'Abdullaah bin Mubaarak:

"Which is better for Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyaan or 'Umar bin' Abdul-'Aziyz?"

He said:

"By God, the dust that was entering the nose of Mu'awiyah with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is better than 'Umar a thousand times. Mu'awiyah prayed behind the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) , and when the Prophet said:

"Samia Allaah liman hamidah ', Mu'awiyah used to say;' Rabbanaa walaka l hamd ', what more do you want besides that?" Wafayatul a'ayan - Ibni Khalqaan (3/33) and the book Ash- Shari'ah Al-Aajiri (0/2466) Al-Bidaya wan-Nihaayah 13/8

It is reported that one man asked Al-Muafiy bin Amran:

"O Aba Mas'ud, Where is the rank of Mu'awiyah in front of 'Umar bin' Abdul-'Aziyz?"

Says Al-Jaraah Al-Mausaliy the narrator of this hadith:

Al Muafiy became very angry and said:

"You cannot compare the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with anyone. And Mu'awiyah was not only a Companion, but he was also its author, his brother-in-law and his faithful in the revelation of Allaah the Almighty."

Says Muhyid-Diyn al-Khatwiyb:

"I was asked by one of the Muslim youths what my opinion was about Mu'awiyah, and I told him:

"Who am I to ask you about Mu'awiyah, this is the noblest of the nobles of this Ummah, his Companions the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and in the best, he is the light among the lamps that illuminate the path, unless this lamp came when the four lights shone on the earth, so the light of the world failed to shine. ”

Let us listen to what Sayiduna 'Ali (Radhiya Allaahu' anhu) says about Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) in the book Nahjul-Balaaghah:

"I wish by God that Mu'awiyah would agree to exchange it with me as it is exchanged for a Dinar for Dirham. Let him take my ten people, and instead give me only one of his people"  (224/39)

When asked by Hasan Al-Basry (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) about' Ali and Mu'awiyah he said:

"This one is related to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and the one related to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

And in another narration he said:

"I was not satisfied with Mu'awiyah in just two respects:

When he went to war with 'Ali, and when he appointed his son as Caliph after him. "

In his Siyrah Mu'awiyah (Radhiya Allaahu 'anhu) we have seen how he received various praise from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), from the noble Companions (Radhiya Allaahu' anhum), from the people of the house of The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and we have also seen how he enters into the various attributes of the virtuous people promised the Paradise mentioned in the Holy Qur'an.

Allaah says:

" And those who came after them say:" Our Lord! Forgive us and our brothers who have preceded us in faith and do not inculcate in our hearts the hatred of those who believe; Our Rabb! Surely You are the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate . ”  Al-Hashr: 10

We ask Allaah not to infuse deep into our hearts for our predecessors, to resurrect us and those whom He promised Paradise under the banner and His Holy Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), let us drink together in his dominion a drink after which we will never thirst again. Aamiyn
