Is Dream Interpretation Allowed In Islam? (Halal or Haram)

Dream interpretation in Islam is not related to magic or palmistry but is a significant part of the Islamic faith. The reality of dreams has been stated in various Hadis, thus indicating the interpretation of dreams as permissible.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the world, and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad; peace be upon him, who is the last Messenger of Allah and a perfect example for mankind.

The question and concern of whether the interpretation of dreams is Halal or Haram have remained a doubt for the Muslim Ummah. Whereas many people mix dream interpretation with future prediction, the reality is quite different.

Dream interpretation is a completely different topic than further prediction or palmistry. The topic of dream interpretation holds great significance in Islamic teachings.

Several Quranic references and Hadiths explain the reality of dreams, further confirming that the interpretation of dreams is completely permissible in Islam.

The Sunnah, sayings, and actions of the Holy Prophet PBUH, peace be upon him, provide support for the practice of dream interpretation, as the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, himself interpreted the dreams of his companions and encouraged them to share good dreams while remaining silent in case of bad dreams.

The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) described dreams in Jami al Tirmizi, 2280 of three kinds;

The first kind, as stated, is from Allah

The second is from Satan, which can indeed result in distress

The last is when an individual thinks about it when he is awake and sees it in a dream when he is asleep.

Dream Interpretation in Islam?

Dream interpretation is Halal.

Dreams have been mentioned in the Quran and Hadis several times, and thus the interpretation of dreams in light of the Quran and Sunnah is considered Halal.

The dreams of people should be interpreted if they align with Islamic teachings. Only those dreams that are in favor of the Quran and Sunnah can be acted upon; otherwise, if a dream contradicts the Sunnah and the Quran, it should not be relied on or acted upon.

In the case of bad dreams, one must seek refuge from Satan, recite Ayat ul Kursi, and keep the dream to himself.

Evidence

Ruya Saadiqah, or true dreams in Islam, hold a special place as they are considered to be a part of prophethood. It is also marked that the dreams were the onset of Revelation.

As per Sahih Al Bukhari Hadis number 6988, Abu Huraira reported that the Holy Prophet, peace be upon him, stated that the true dreams of a believer or a pious person are forty-six parts of the Prophethood. Added to this, truthful dreams often come to those who are pious and truthful in speech.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, dream interpretation is not a sin. However, it is an important part of Islamic knowledge closely related to prophethood. It is important to note that the interpretation of dreams should be taken with knowledge, sincerity, and expertise.

May Allah guide us all to the righteous path and save us from going astray.
